Georges life was a rich blend of military adventure, political power and intrigue flavoured with a liberal sprinkling of escandal. The son of the Battle of Jutland sailor hero. he became an Earl at 17 and quickly developed a Churchillian approach to alcohol and an Edwardian attitude to morality. During WW11, he joined the newly formed SAS ‘L’ Detachment and went on to be the first Commander oif the Special Boat Squadron operating with the SOE and raiding enemy-occupied Greek islands before liberating Athens on a bicycle. These exploits won him a DSO and MC.
